WACO, Texas - For the first time this season the Texas Tech volleyball lost a game after reaching the 20-point mark first as it fell to the Baylor Bears, 3-0, Wednesday night at the Ferrell Center in Waco, Texas.
Game three saw the Red Raiders jump out to an early 6-1 lead. But as was the case in game one, Baylor refused to roll over and took its first lead, 15-14. Tech would fight back and lead, 20-18. For the just the second time this season the Red Raiders would give up a lead after reaching 20 first, 21-20. The Red Raiders would regain the lead at 23-21 but could not hold onto the lead as they fall, 30-26.
Tech (7-8, 2-4) looked like it would roll through the struggling Bears in game one as it scored the first four points of the game. But Baylor would slowly cut into the Red Raider lead and tie the game up at 11 all. From there the two teams would trade points until with the score knotted at 19, the Bears went on a five point run. Tech would pull within one, 26-25, but that would be as close as it would get as Baylor ended the game with a four-point run.
Baylor (8-8, 2-4) led game two from wire-to-wire and by as many as 10 late, 25-15. Behind the serves of Laura Grote (Austin, Texas), Tech would score the next four points and pull within five points. The Red Raiders would battle back cutting the Bear's lead to three, 26-23, before finally falling behind 2-0 in the match, 30-24.
Tech was led in hitting by Kelly Johnson (Fort Worth, Texas) who recorded 13 kills and had a pair of service aces. Senior Melissa McGehee (Kerrville, Texas) was second on the team with 12 kills while Angela Mooney (Lubbock, Texas)tallied 10.
