Tech Steamrolls Kansas, 3-0

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech volleyball team pounded out 46 kills with only 10 errors in games one and three as it avenged an early-season loss to the Kansas Jayhawks Wednesday night at the United Spirit Arena, 3-0.
Tech (9-13, 4-9) was led offensively by Kelly Johnson (Fort Worth, Texas) and Angela Mooney (Lubbock, Texas) who combined for 42 kills on just four errors as they hit .465 and .462 respectively. Sophomore Laura Grote (Austin, Texas) orchestrated a Red Raider attack that over came a .092 hitting percentage in game two to hit .261 for the match.
Game one saw the scarlet and black knock down 24 balls on 50 swings while committing just six errors. Mooney recorded a game-high eight kills while Johnson had six and added a pair of service aces while hitting .750, as Tech hit .360 in taking the first game, 30-24.
Kansas (17-5, 8-5) battled a tough Tech defense all night and hung with the Red Raiders in game two, despite recording eight kills with eight errors. The Red Raiders helped keep the Jayhawks in the second game by committing 13 attack errors and four service errors. Leading 27-25, Tech looked like it would enter the intermission with a comfortable 2-0 lead in the match. But a pair of Red Raider service errors and attack error, combined with a KU kill gave the Jayhawks a one-point lead at 29-28. A pair of Mooney kills and a kill by Melissa McGehee stopped the Kansas comeback and gave the Red Raiders the 31-29 win.
Tech returned to it old tricks in the third game as it pounded out 22 kills on 46 attempts to hit .391 and complete the sweep, 30-15.
Libero Jessy Herrera (New Braunfels, Texas) led the Tech defense with a match-high 20 digs to tie her career-high, while Ann Romjue (Papillion, Nebraska) tallied 15 dig.
The Red Raiders will return to action this weekend as it travels to Norman, Okla., to take on the Sooners. First serve for the match is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the OU Field House.
