LUBBOCK, Tx. - The Texas Tech men's tennis team will begin its 2002 season with its first match Sunday Feb. 3. The Red Raiders will host the Gents of Centenary at the Lubbock Country Club at 9 a.m.
The Red Raiders look to get off to a good start this year and improve on an injury plagued 6-14 season. Senior Royce Rayme (Richardson, Texas) looks to rebound from a season that was cut short due to illness and shoulder surgery. After the fall season, Rayme was ranked 14th in the South Central by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
The doubles tandem of senior Richard Crabtree (Hebden Bridge, England) and sophomore Ben Gudzelak (Halifax, England) finished the fall ranked ninth in the region.
The Gents play in the Southland Conference for men's tennis. The team returns top player Todd Killen. The Gents are looking to improve from last year's record of 3-20 (0-7 conference).
Last season the Red Raiders defeated the Gents 6-0 in Lubbock. Tech will be in action on the road Feb. 14-16 when it takes on Arizona State, Arizona, and Northern Arizona.
