LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Texas Tech softball team fell to #13 Alabama, 7-0, Sunday morning in the fifth and final game of the UNLV Softball Classic held in Las Vegas, Nev.
Tech (3-12) got a good pitching performance from starter Maggie Ayres who went four innings giving up just one earned run while scattering four hits with two walks.
Alabama (7-6) cashed in on a Red Raider miscue in the third as with one run already across the plate Tech misplayed a pickoff attempt with Tide runners on the corners. The errant throw to second found a way past centerfielder Esmerelda Perez and Alabama had a 3-0 lead.
In the top of the second Tech had back-to-back singles to lead off the inning and after a Jana Baker sacrifice bunt it had runners on the corners with one out. But the rally proved fruitless as rightfielder Tiffany Harrington's fly ball to left was caught and Andrea Joachims was thrown out at the plate trying to tag from third.
The Crimson Tide would explode for four runs in the fifth all with two outs to end the Red Raiders chances of making a late comeback.
Tech will have its home opener Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. when it takes on New Mexico State. The game was originally scheduled to be a double header but due to NMSU travel arrangements the second game has been canceled. After the game the softball team will be available for autographs. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students and children with groups of 10 or more getting in for a dollar each.
