No. 1 Red Raiders turn deficit into run-rule win
Kaitlyn Terry improved to 16-1 on the season after throwing 1.1 perfect innings including two strikeouts. Samantha Lincoln got the start and had a shutout 4.0 innings before the Aggie bats got to her in the bottom of the fifth.
Lauren Allred was a perfect 4-for-4 with five RBI in the game to lead the offense. Jasmyn Burns had two homers and is now at 10 on the season, the fourth Red Raider to reach double digit after having just one hitter over 10 last season. Terry hit her eighth homer of the season and finished with three RBI to go along with her win in the circle.
Mihyia Davis finished 2-for-4 with an RBI while Desirae Spearman, Mia Williams, Taylor Pannell and Logan Halleman all recorded hits. Tech also stole five bases, two coming from the cleats of Williams.
How it Happened:
Tech held a 6-0 lead going into the bottom of the fifth inning thanks to a Burns homer and a couple of line drives from Allred. With one out in the Aggies half of the fifth, Utah State drew three walks and got a single to record a run and load the bases. The Aggie faithful were fully engaged in the game and then erupted once they hit a grand slam to make the game 6-5. The Red Raiders put back in its original starters, after switching a few things around earlier, and brought in Chloe Riassetto in relief. The Aggies added two more runs to take a 7-6 lead. With two outs and one on, Terry would take the ball. Terry got a full-count strikeout to get a fired up Red Raider team back on offense to try and right the ship after giving up seven runs.
Spearman led things off with a single up the middle to pass the bat to Davis who doubled off the wall to put runners at second and third. Terry put a ball in play and on a crazy play, the Utah State catcher missed an easy tag of Spearman who was darting home and made the game 7-7. Williams drove in two more runs after that on a single up the middle. Lis reached on an error and allowed Williams to score after purposefully getting in a rundown between first and second.
Up 10-7, Pannell got the next run of scoring going with a single. Hailey Toney was hit by a pitch and then Allred crushed a ball to left field to make it 13-7. Before the dust settled on the Allred's long ball, Burns went deep for the second time. An error in right allowed Spearman to get to third before Davis drove her home. Terry put the finishing on the inning with a homer to dead center to turn a one-run deficit into run rule victory.
UP NEXT: The Red Raiders will be back in Texas to face UTSA tomorrow at 6 p.m. in San Antonio.
