LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech softball team used 11 hits and a perfectly timed rain/hail storm to end its 10-game losing skid as it defeated the New Mexico State Aggies 7-4 in Tech's home opener.
The Red Raiders (4-12) batted around and scored four runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-1 lead, an advantage that they would never relinquish. The inning started with a Jana Baker walk and a Lisa Lawler single. Tracy Cartier's sacrifice fly drove in Baker knotting the score up at 2. With two outs in the inning Esmerelda Perez singled followed by back-to-back walks to Rebecca Eimen and Kristi Robles, which scored Lawler. Carmen Grindell's double scored both Perez and Robles.
NMSU (6-15) would get a two-run homer off Tech starter Amie Stines in the fifth. After a walk to the designated player the skies opened up with a downpour of rain and hail.
After a 30-minute delay play resumed but the Aggie rally did not.
Tech would add two more runs in the home half of the sixth and retire NMSU in order for the win.
Kristina Blair went three innings without allowing a hit and striking out three to get her second win of the season.
The scarlet and black will next be in action this weekend playing at the Troy Cox Classic held in Las Cruses, N.M. The Red Raiders will face the Aggies two more times in the tournament as well as Dayton and #15 Florida State.
