LAS CRUCES, N.M. - On an 0-2 count New Mexico State first baseman Amber Logsdon belted a two-run homer over the left-centerfield fence giving the Aggies a 5-3 win as NMSU handed Tech its first loss of the Troy Cox Classic in Las Cruces, N.M.
Tech (7-13) put together a rally in the bottom of the seventh as pinch hitter Amanda Douglas singled to lead off the inning. With one out, Tracy Cartier singled moving Douglas to second but a fielder's choice erased Cartier at second and Rebecca Eimen grounded out, 5-3, to ending the rally and Tech's 4-game win streak.
NMSU (8-16) used timely hitting as Logsdon belted a pair of two-out homers driving in four of the Aggies' five runs.
For the second straight game Eimen circled the bases, hitting her third home run of the season and second of the day in the sixth, pulling the Red Raiders within two.
Trailing 3-0 in the fourth, the Red Raiders got back-to-back singles from Eimen and Kristi Robles who extended her hitting streak to eight games. Robles' single scored Eimen who had moved to second on a stolen base. Carmen Grindell advanced Robles to third on a ground out and Jana Baker grounded out to second scoring Robles cutting the NMSU lead to one, 3-2.
The Aggies opened the scoring in the top of the fourth by hitting a solo homerun to lead off the inning followed by Logsdon's first dinger of the afternoon.
With the loss Tech falls into a three-way tie for first place in the round-robin tournament with both the Aggies and #17 Florida State.
The tournament will conclude tomorrow afternoon as Tech takes on both NMSU and FSU at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. respectively.
