Lubbock, TX - Jon Mark Beilue of the Amarillo Globe-News recently wrote about the 352 days of non-stop focus on Texas Tech, Lubbock, and college basketball. All because Dr. David Schmidly and Gerald Myers were of one mind in hiring Bob Knight to lead the Red Raider basketball team. And lead them he has!
Previous records of wins and losses were matched up against the team's current 23-8 posting. Attendance figures were printed for all to see. Now, Texas Tech has earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament and gained a few accolades from the United States Basketball Writers Association.
The Red Raiders earned a sixth seed in the East Regional and will face Southern Illinois University at the United Center in Chicago on Friday, March 15. Tipoff time is slated for 6:50 p.m. The game will be aired by CBS. Play-by-play coverage will be provided by Tim Brando. Eddie Fogler will serve as analyst and Charles Davis will report from the sidelines.
In addition to gaining their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1996, the Red Raiders were well represented in the USBWA 2001-2002 District VII Team, as voted by the association's membership.
Here are the results for District VII: (TX, AR, LA)
PLAYER OF THE YEAR T.J. Ford, Texas

ALL-DISTRICT TEAM Mire Chatman, UTPA Ronald Dupree, LSU Andy Ellis, Texas Tech Andre Emmett, Texas Tech T.J. Ford, Texas Damon Hancock, SMU Gerrod Henderson, La. Tech Bernard King, Texas A&M Jannero Pargo, Arkansas Lawrence Roberts, Baylor
