LAWRENCE, Kan. - Texas Tech and Kansas battled to a scoreless tie through six and one-half innings before the Jayhawks scored the only run of the game to sweep the two-game series, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Jayhawk Field in Lawrence, Kan.
In the home-half of the seventh the Jayhawks got a lead off double from Amy Hulse. The senior was advanced to third as Courtney Wright recorded an infield single. Amie Stines entered the game to face pinch hitter Serena Settlemier who hit a sharp grounder to third. The throw to the plate was late as Hulse scored the only run of the contest.
Tech (12-32, 1-11 Big 12) got an outstanding pitching performance from freshman Kristina Blair who went 4.1 innings allowing no runs on three hits before giving way to Jennifer Vaught in the fifth.
Kansas' (28-17, 5-6 Big 12) junior Kirsten Milhoan was equal to the challenge as she went the distance allowing no runs on just two Red Raider hits.
The Jayhawks looked to have something brewing in the fifth as they got a lead off single from Hulse and a bunt single down the third baseline from Courtney Wright. With two on and no outs Dani May slapped a ball past a pulled in Andrea Joachims at third. Kristi Robles fielded the ball and tagged third for the force out. Vaught came in and got a ground out to first and a line out to short to retire the side.
In the sixth the Red Raiders got a leadoff single from Eva Harshman. Harshman advanced to second on Esmerelda Perez's ground out to the pitcher and a pair of defensive gems kept the score knotted at nil.
Rebecca Eimen laced a shot down the third baseline that was snared by Megan Urqhart and Robles looked to have extra bases as she hit a sinking-liner that Shelly Musser made a head-long diving play on to end the inning.
The Red Raiders will return to action on Tues., April 16, as Oklahoma City travels to Rocky Johnson Field for a doubleheader followed by the University of Texas on Wednesday. Both doubleheaders are scheduled for a 2 p.m. first pitch.
