LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech exploded for nine runs on 13 hits as junior Maggie Ayres pitched her second consecutive complete game in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader with the Missouri Tigers to avoid being swept in its fifth consecutive series at University Field in Columbia, Mo.
Tech (13-37, 2-14 Big 12) scored five runs through the first three innings of the second game and rode the arm of the Roseville, Calif., native to its second win in conference action.
In the first, Esmerelda Perez led off the game with her team-leading 41st hit of the season but was cut down at second on an attempted steal. Kristi Robles then walked setting up Jana Baker's second homerun of the season giving the Red Raiders a 2-0 lead.
Missouri (28-29, 4-12 Big 12) avoided the shutout in the bottom of the sixth as it scored its only run of the game aided by two of its three hits in the game.
Tech would match the two runs scored in the first with two in the second. A walk and three consecutive singles allowed the Red Raiders to open the game up and after Robles' team-leading 11th double in the third was followed by an Ashley Ready single which scored the Tech shortstop, Texas Tech lead 5-0.
The Red Raiders completed the mercy run-rule game in the sixth by scoring four runs on five hits highlighted by Robles' two-RBI single that scored Rebecca Eimen and Perez.
In game one, Tech tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third only to give up five unearned runs on five hits and three Tech errors in the home-half of the fourth as the Tigers extended their winning streak to five games.
The Tech softball team will conclude the 2002 regular season next weekend as the 4th ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers in Lubbock, Texas at Rocky Johnson Field. First pitch on Sat., April 27, is scheduled for 2 p.m. with the second game slated for noon on Sunday.
