LUBBOCK, Texas - The 2003 Texas Tech baseball recruiting class grew to 22 players today as head coach Larry Hays announced the signing of five student-athletes who will join the Red Raiders this fall.
"We are going to be forced to rebuild our infield next season because of all the seniors that we will lose this year and I think we are getting together a nucleus of guys that are going to be able to get the job done," said Texas Tech Head Coach Larry Hays. "These guys give us a lot of different looks and all have the potential to have good careers at Texas Tech."
Jeff Karstens, a 6'3 right-handed pitcher from Grossmont Junior College in San Diego, is the only true pitcher among the group and is one of the top JUCO pitchers in California this year. He has a 6-1 record with a 1.77 ERA in nine starts and has struckout 60 batters.
James Gripp, a senior outfielder and former teammate of current Tech freshman Madison Edwards at Midland High School, comes to the Red Raiders after being named All-State in 2001 and is a candidate for the same honors this season. Gripp is batting .477 with 29 RBI, three home runs and 11 doubles.
Brad Workman, a pitcher/middle infielder from Howard College in Big Spring, comes to Tech off a very solid 2002 campaign in which he hit .358 with seven home runs, 38 RBI, 16 doubles and three triples.
Cooper Fouts, a catcher from the Community College of Southern Nevada and brother of current Red Raider Nathan Fouts, hit .324 this past season in a wood bat league. Fouts tallied four doubles, two triples and 21 RBI and committed just five errors for a fielding percentage of .984. The signing of Fouts will give Texas Tech if first all brother battery (pitcher/catcher).
The final signee among the group is Aaron Albus who is a junior left-handed pitcher/first baseman at Ranger College in Weatherford, Texas. Albus hit .425 this past season with six home runs and as a pitcher tallied a 4-4 overall record.
