Game 9 - Kansas State 7, Texas Tech 6 (Texas Tech is eliminated)
Brandon Taylor's double with one out in the bottom of the eighth drove home Nick Sorensen and lifted the Kansas State Wildcats to a 7-6 victory over the Texas Tech Red Raiders in the elimination game in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Tournament at the Ballpark in Arlington Friday night.
Jonathan Guiterrez of Kansas State and Texas Tech's Dusty Buck were named as Big 12 Conference co-pitchers of the week for games May 13-19 by the members of the media. It is believed to be the first time that co-pitchers of the week have met in tournament play.
The grand slam was the first since Ryan Hubele of Texas in 2000 against Texas Tech. It was only the second grand slam in Phillips 66 Big 12 Tournament history.
Guiterrez tied a tournament record of three walks in the same inning, tying the mark last set by Evan Greusel of Oklahoma against Texas in the 2001 tournament.
Maloney singled in the fifth to extend his consecutive games reaching base streak to 32 games. That was before Tim Doty blasted a two-run homer into the right field seats to tie the game at 5-5 off Buck. In the bottom of the eighth, second baseman Brandon Taylor gave the Wildcats their first lead of the game at 7-6 on a double down the right field line, scoring Nick Sorensen from third. Sorensen reached on a single to left, stole second and went to third on a passed ball.
This is the first time that the Wildcats have advanced to the bracket final in school history. Kansas State's last appearance was in 1996 in the Big 8 tournament when they lost to Oklahoma State 10-4 and Kansas 14-4. Kansas State won the season series 3-2, including winning 2 of 3 during the regular season at Lubbock. Two of the five games went extra innings - a 15-inning affair in Lubbock and 12-inning contest in the opening game of the tournament, with both teams winning one game.
Willie Durazo's three passed balls allowed is a Phillips 66 Big 12 Tournament record, breaking the previous record of two set by several players.
