LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech volleyball coach Jeff Nelson announced the signing of Jessica Watson from Leon High School in Jewett, Texas, to a National Letter of Intent for the upcoming volleyball season.
"Jessica is a great addition to our program," commented Nelson. "She is strong academically, athletically and at six-foot-one she has the size we are looking for in the middle."
Watson excelled both in the classroom as well as in on the court. She was Valedictorian of her class and a member of National Honor Society for three years as well as a member of FCA, the Debate team, secretary of FFA and student council.
Watson was a class 2A first-team All-State, All-State Tournament Team, Academic All-District and All-District Best Hitter selection. She tallied a hitting percentage of .489 percent with 218 kills and 1.13 blocks per game as a senior. She helped to lead her high school team to back-to-back state tournaments where it won the state title as a junior and was a runner-up last season.
"Tech is where I wanted to go from the start," said Watson. "I would like to get some playing time, but I mostly want to be an asset even if it means that I have to root for the team from the bench."
The 2002 season will get underway Sat., Aug. 24, with the Red/Black scrimmage at the United Spirit Arena at a time yet to be determined.
