Butkus Award Names Flugence to List

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando announced today the preliminary list of 67 candidates for this year's award, including Texas Tech senior linebacker Lawrence Flugence (Klein, Texas).
Flugence has led the Big 12 Conference in tackles each of the last two seasons and has 307 stops for his career. He earned Associated Press All-America honors a year ago and was named to Athlon Magazine's Preseason All-America first team this season. He currently ranks 11th at Tech in career tackles and is one shy of cracking the top 10. If he continues his pace of the last two seasons, Flugence will finish second at Tech and rank first all-time in the Big 12 with 457 career tackles.
Flugence leads 11 Big 12 players represented among the 67.
The Butkus Award Watch List will be trimmed to 10 semifinalists on Thu., Oct. 17. That list will be cut down to three finalists, who will be announced via a national teleconference with players, coaches, media members and Butkus Award officials on Thu., Nov. 14. The winner will be announced Fri., Dec. 13.
The award's namesake, former University of Illinois and Chicago Bear NFL Hall of Fame member, Dick Butkus, will present the Butkus Award to the winner.
