With the score 29-17 in the third game of Texas Tech's opener Ann Romjue delivered the final point in the form of an ace, as the Red Raiders opened the season with a 3-0 victory, 30-22, 30-23, 30-17, over the Fairfield Stags at the Hofsrta/Asics Classic in Hempstead, N.Y.
After struggling the first two games of the match Tech had its way with Stags in the third and final game. Melissa McGehee (Kerrville, Texas) paced the offense with five kills, giving her 997 for her career. Libero, Jessy Herrera (New Braunfels, Texas) turned in a game-high five digs.
The first game of the night saw the Red Raiders win the first three points and hold off a pesky Stags team, 30-22. Tech was led offensively in the first game by McGehee who recorded eight kills while Mooney and Romjue each had four and defensively Grote had three digs.
In the second game Tech would score 13 of the first 16 points and win the game 30-23. Johnson would tally a game-high six kills in the match and McGehee would record a game-high four digs.
Head coach Jeff Nelson was pleased with his team's performance in the season opener.
"I thought that our chemistry and focus was good tonight," said Nelson. "We stayed aggressive and never let them get a big run on us. I thought that Melissa and Kelly did really well on the outside for us tonight and Grote ran a good offense."
The turning point in the match came in the second game when setter Laura Grote (Austin, Texas) earned six consecutive points while serving forcing Fairfield to take an early timeout.
"We didn't want them to be able to run their offense," stated Grote. "Kristin Fernandez was there weakest ball handler so we talked about serving aggressively and trying to make her make plays."
Tech will conclude play in the tournament tomorrow with a pair of games. In the first game of the day the Red Raiders will take on the Kentucky Wildcats, 10 a.m., and will close out play with host-school Hofstra at 5 p.m.
