HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - The Texas Tech volleyball team wrapped up a successful season-opening tournament by downing host-school Hofstra, 3-0, in Saturday's championship match at the Hofsta/Asics Classic in Hempstead, N.Y.
The tournament title moved Tech Head Coach past Janice Hudson (1975-1984) for career tournament titles with 15.
"I am very pleased with the way we played this weekend," commented Nelson. "Melissa had a great tournament and I thought that Laura did a great job as well, running the offense for the first time. I really liked the pace we played at for most of the tournament, it was a quick pace."
For her efforts this weekend senior Melissa McGehee (Kerrville, Texas) was named tournament Most Valuable Player. Joining McGehee on the All-Tournament team was senior Ann Romjue (Papillion, Neb.) and sophomore Laura Grote (Austin, Texas).
Tech (3-0) proved to be too much for the Flying Duchwomen as it took the third and final game of the match, 30-24. Just like in the previous two games of the night Hofstra (2-1) held Tech close during the early stages of the game. But with the score at nine all the Red Raiders started to impose their will and proved too much for the home team.
The Red Raider attack was led by McGehee who recorded a game-high 14 kills and Angela Mooney (Lubbock, Texas) who added 12 kills of her own. For the third consecutive match Jessy Herrera (New Braunfels, Texas) led Tech in digs with a game-high 19.
In the first game of the match Tech looked as if it was going to run away from the Flying Duchwomen as it jumped out to an early 8-1 lead. Following a Hofstra timeout, the Duchwomen rallied back to knot the score at eight, causing Nelson to use a timeout of his own. But from that point, the Red Raiders would build a 20-13 lead before polishing off Hofstra, 30-22.
Game two was much like the first, as Tech led 11-8 before Hofstra took a timeout. With the Red Raiders leading 17-11, Tech would all but put away HU as it built the lead up to 22-11 and ended the game scoring six of the final eight points for a 30-18 victory.
Tech will be in action next weekend as it travels to Las Vegas, Nev., for the UNLV/Gameworks Classic where it will take on Ball State, UNLV and California in the Fri.-Sun. tournament.
