HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Texas Tech needed just 71 minutes to earn the 675 overall victory and the school's first over the Kentucky Wildcats, 3-0, Saturday morning at the Hofstra/Asics Classic. The win was also a historic one for Melissa McGehee as she eclipsed the 1,000 digs mark and moved into sixth on the career kills list.
Offensively, Tech was led by senior McGehee (Kerrville, Texas) and junior Angela Mooney (Lubbock, Texas). McGehee led Tech in kills for the second consecutive match with 15 and was second on the team in digs with four giving her 1,001 for her career. Mooney tallied 11 kills and a game-high four service aces.
"Today was exciting," said McGehee. "I feel better than I did at the scrimmage and last year when I was tired all the time. I have felt good and had lots of energy so far and the girls on the court really make this fun. I am having fun and am relaxed which is what makes this game fun, along with winning."
The third and final game was a struggle as Tech (2-0) and Kentucky (0-2) traded blows to a 10-10 tie. It was at that point that the Red Raiders started to pull away and finally put away KU, 30-19.
In the first game Tech won 12 of the first 17 points causing Kentucky to call a timeout. The Red Raiders would then outscore the Wildcats 18-11 to close out game one, 30-17.
The second game of the morning the Wildcats hung around early, but with the score knotted at eight the Red Raiders went on a 14-9 run forcing Kentucky coach Jona Braden to call a timeout. Tech only allowed KU to score three more points in taking a 2-0 lead, 30-20.
The Red Raiders will be looking for their 15th tournament title under Jeff Nelson later this afternoon when they take on tournament host, Hofstra, at 5 p.m. (EST). With a win Nelson will have the most tournament wins in school history, surpassing Tech's first coach, Janice Hudson (1975-1984).
