LUBBOCK, Texas - Wednesday night the Texas Tech volleyball team will host the 5th ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers at 7 p.m. in the United Spirit Arena in the Red Raiders' Big 12 home opener.
Both schools enter the match with spotless conference records, so something will have to give.
Tech (6-4, 1-0 Big 12) is led by last year's Big 12 Conference Newcomer of the Year, Kelly Johnson (Fort Worth, Texas), who has a team-high 152 kills this season and leads the team in service aces with 14. Senior Melissa McGehee (Kerrville, Texas) should become Tech's All-time kills leader as she is just one kill shy of Brande Brown's (1994-97) record of 1,083.
Nebraska (9-1, 2-0 Big 12) enters the match having swept its last five opponents, including then-24th ranked Texas last Saturday. The lone blemish on the Husker's record was a 3-0 loss to now-top ranked Southern Cal back in August. NU brings to Lubbock a 52 match Big 12 win streak that dates back to 1999.
The Red Raiders are just one of six teams in the Big 12 that have taken a match from the Huskers since the inception of the super-conference. That win came on Oct. 26, 1996. It was a grueling five-set match that saw Tech pull out a 15-12 victory in the final game. Making the win that much more special was the fact Nebraska was ranked 5th at the time and the win came at home.
