Lawrence, Kan. - After battling five games in Tech's last two visits to Lawrence, Kan., and coming away with 3-2 wins each time, the Red Raiders were looking for a repeat performance and a little luck as it took on the Kansas Jayhawks Saturday night at the Horejsi Family Center.
Trailing, 29-27, in the third game and 2-0 in the match Tech managed to score the next two points but could not overcome the deficit as Kansas swept the Red Raiders, 3-0 for only its third win ever over Tech.
Tech (6-6, 1-2 Big 12) was led offensively by sophomore Kelly Johnson (Fort Worth, Texas) who recorded 15 kills on 35 attempts. Senior Ann Romjue (Papillion, Neb.) and Angela Mooney (Lubbock, Texas) each tacked on 10 kills in a losing effort.
Kansas (11-1, 3-1) as a team hit .339 for the match and was led by Josiane Lima (Sao Paula, Brazil) who hit a match-high 18 kills. Ashley Michaels (Wathena, Kan.) hit .667 for the match with 13 kills on 18 attempts.
The first game of the match was all Kansas as the Jayhawks cut off the attack lanes and forced Tech to hit low percentage shots. For the game, Tech hit just .100 with 12 kills on 40 attempts while KU hit .441 with 17 kills on 34 attempts.
Game two saw the Red Raiders jump out early on the Jayhawks, 12-7. But KU would slowly cut into Tech's lead before taking only its second lead of the game at 20-19. From that point Kansas went on a 7-3 run and looked to have game two under control. That is when the Red Raiders would go on a 4-1 run of their own cutting the KU lead to one, 28-27. That, however, would be the last point Tech would score as Kansas entered the break with a 2-0 lead.
The Red Raiders will be on the road again Wednesday, Oct. 2, as it travels to Manhattan, Kan., for a 7 p.m. match with the Wildcats at the Ahearn Field House.
