LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech head football coach Mike Leach named former graduate assistant Bill Bedenbaugh running backs coach, filling the position vacated by Art Briles, who was named head coach at the University of Houston in December.
"Bill is an incredible coach and person," Leach said. "He has a complete understanding of our offense and is more experienced in our offense than anyone on staff besides me."
Bedenbaugh was a graduate assistant at Texas Tech during Leach's first three seasons and worked primarily with the offensive line. His work with the offensive line alongside O-line coach Robert Anae enabled the Tech passing game to lead the Big 12 Conference for the third-straight season and allow the running game to turn in its best performance since 1999.
Prior to his appointment at Texas Tech in 2000, Bedenbaugh was the offensive line coach and running game coordinator at Ferris State in 1999. He coached two all-conference linemen and was named NCAA Division II Coordinator of the Year.
Additionally, Bedenbaugh was a graduate assistant at Central Michigan in 1997 and 1998 and coached with Leach at Valdosta State in 1996. He also was the offensive line at Oklahoma Panhandle State in 1995.
The St. Charles, Ill., native earned a degree in business in 1995 from Iowa Wesleyan, where he played for Leach and was a four-year starter. He received a master's degree in sport management from Texas Tech in 2001.
