Tech Volleyball Drops Oklahoma 3-0

LUBBOCK, Texas - Tech volleyball shut down the Oklahoma Sooners tonight 3-0 (30-21, 30-24, 30-27) at the United Spirit Arena to clinch its first conference win of the season, also snapping a 10 match losing streak. The Sooners have not scored a game against the Raiders in 11 matches.
Game one opened on a 4-0 Oklahoma run. Tech got its first lead of the game at 9-8 amidst a 6-0 run including two Oklahoma errors. At 19-15, Tech went on a 5-0 run including kills of the arm of Kelly Johnson. Johnson slammed a match-high 16 kills with two aces. Defensively she added eight digs and five total blocks, three solo which tied a career high. A kill by Christina Miller brought the score to 29-21 and an ace off Kiley Lyons sealed the win.
Tech began game two leading Oklahoma until two kills and an ace by Oklahoma gave the Sooners a 7-9 lead. Tech went on a 3-0 run but an assisted block by Miller and Laura Grote stopped the run, giving way to Tech's own 9-0 run. Grote finished the match with 32 assists, one service ace, three digs and three blocks. Breanna Pursley laid down a kill bringing the match to game point and was followed by a Johnson kill to win the game 30-24. Pursley finished the match with 13 kills, one service ace and eight digs.
Tech led the game until an Oklahoma kill tied the game at 5-5. Joanna Schmitt led the Sooners with 14 kills with nine digs. Oklahoma would get its first lead of the game at 6-5 but would not re-gain the lead when a Miller kill brought the score to 9-7. Miller finished the match with seven kills and two blocks. The teams battled point for point until Tech went on a 4-0 run bringing the score to 24-20. An ace off the serve of Daneen Grisham brought the score to 27-22. Grisham finished the game with six digs and two aces, tying a career best in aces. Oklahoma fought off a loss holding the Raiders at 29 and going on a 4-0 run bringing the score 29-27. However Tech won game point and concluded the match with a win.
Tech (9-10, 1-9) is headed into two tough matches as it hosts No. 24 Missouri on Saturday and No. 11 Nebraska on Wednesday. Both games will begin at 7 p.m. and will be played at the United Spirit Arena.
