LUBBOCK, Texas - The Lady Raider softball team will take on the New Mexico State University Aggies tomorrow in a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. This will be the first series for the team, outside of tournament play in 2003.
With only a few days to rest after a weekend of tough competition at the Fiesta Bowl Classic in Phoenix, Ariz., the Lady Raiders (3-7) will take on the Aggies (0-3). Tech has not beaten NMSU in the past two meetings but still holds the series record 9-7. The 2002 season was fruitful for the team at the Presley Askew softball field. At the Troy Cox Classic, the team beat #17 Florida State twice, winning the tournament.
Tech looks to improve on its performance at the Fiesta Bowl Classic (1-4). The squad hit .248 at the Classic with all but one batter earning a hit. For the season, shortstop Kristi Robles, outfielder Amanda Douglas and second baseman Shayne Gipson lead the Lady Raiders in batting. Robles has logged 12 hits, six runs and two homeruns in the 10 games played. Douglas has a slugging percentage of .600 including four RBI and one triple. Gipson has recorded five hits and is 2-2 in stolen bases.
After Wednesday's series, the team will head to Las Vegas, Nev., for the UNLV Classic Feb. 14-16.
