LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech softball ended its 2003 home campaign on a four game winning streak as it swept the New Mexico State Aggies 11-3, 8-1 today at Rocky Johnson Field in Lubbock, Texas. Sophomore Kelly Rhyne finished the series 6-for-7 while junior Lisa Lawler went 5-for-7 against the Aggies.
The Aggies threatened the Lady Raiders in the first with a two-run homerun off Christine Stephens. Tech responded with three Lady Raiders getting hits including a two run single by Andrea Joachims. With bases loaded in the second, Rhyne hit a line drive down the left field line for a three-RBI double.
In the fourth the Aggies scored one run off a Tech error. Esmerelda Perez slammed a triple, her first of the season. Pitcher Anita Knight walked Shayne Gipson and Kristi Robles when Rhyne came up to slam a three-run homerun giving Tech an 8-3 lead.
In the top of the fifth, the Aggies placed three on base but would not score with Tech putting one run on the board. In the sixth two runs were walked in to give Tech an 11-3 win over the Aggies.
In game two the Aggies marked their only run of the game off one Aggie hit. Tech logged five hits in the first including RBI singles by Rhyne and Lawler and a two-RBI single by Joachims.
In the second Tech again logged five hits starting with a double by Rhyne, her 12th of the season, to score Robles who landed on base with a walk. Amanda Douglas, Joachims and Lawler hit RBI-singles to give Tech an 8-1 advantage heading into the third.
Tech took their lead into the seventh, just one run short of a run rule game but would play a complete game, handing NMSU an 8-1 loss. Amie Stines pitched seven innings in game two striking out six batters and allowing only three hits, earning her eighth win of the season. Stines also earned her eighth save of the season in game one with Kristina Blair improving to 6-7 on the season.
