Tech Softball Loses 7-6 Heart breaker
April 05, 2003 | Softball
It was a slugfest for the Lady Raiders as they took on the #24 Kansas Jayhawks to a 7-6 finish at Rocky Johnson Field in Lubbock, Texas. Tech overcame two Kansas leads but a Jayhawk homerun in the seventh sealed the loss.
The Lady Raiders could not keep the Jayhawks off the board in the first with Kansas scoring three runs including a homerun by Jessica Moppin, her tenth of the season. The Jayhawks took advantage of two Tech errors to round out their scoring drive in the first.
Tech broke pitcher Kara Pierce's perfect game in the bottom of the fourth when Esmerelda Perez recorded a hit, making it to second on an error by the pitcher. Shayne Gipson and Kelly Rhyne both singled leaving the bases juiced. With bases loaded, Elyssa Sigala slammed her third homerun of the season, giving Tech a 4-3 lead.
A two-RBI single by Sandy Smith gave Kansas their lead back in the fifth but Tech responded with a two-RBI double by Andrea Joachims, her sixth of the season, to give the Lady Raiders a 6-5 lead.
With two outs against her in the seventh, Nettie Fierros hit a two-RBI homerun for a 7-6 lead. Tech landed three men on base in the seventh but could not plate a run.
Tech (14-33) will continue its series with Kansas tomorrow at 1 pm at Rocky Johnson Field.
