Tech Volleyball Kicks Off 2003 Season at Islander Invitational

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Red Raider volleyball squad opens up its season in Corpus Christi, Texas, at the Islander Classic where it will face Sam Houston, Southern Miss, North Carolina A&T and Texas A&M- Corpus Christi tomorrow and Saturday. This is the team's first appearance at the Islander Invitational.
The Red Raiders started last season with a tournament win at the Hofstra/Asics Classic in Hempstead, N.Y. The beginning of the season has been quite positive for the Red Raiders as Tech is 22-6 in season openers. The Red Raiders head into tomorrow's and Saturday's matches with winning records over all their opponents.
Senior Angela Mooney and juniors Kelly Johnson and Laura Grote look to be leaders for this year's squad. Johnson and Grote both ended the 2002 season as conference leaders with Johnson in kills, aces and points and Grote in assists per game.
Tech will square off tomorrow with Sam Houston State at 11:30 a.m. and Southern Miss at 4:30 p.m. Play will continue on Saturday with matches against North Carolina A&T at 11:30 a.m. and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 7 p.m.
