Tech Volleyball Wins Islander Invitational

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Red Raider volleyball squad got an exceptional start to its 2003 season going 4-0 at the Islander Invitational in Corpus Christi, Texas. Tech beat North Carolina A&T and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi both in three games to win the Islander tournament.
Tech faced North Carolina A&T, handing them a loss in three games, 30-16, 30-16, 30-25. Kelly Johnson had a team-high 16 kills with Angela Mooney contributing ten. Raven Garrett, the only freshman to play all three games, served two aces, tying with Grote. Freshman Christina Miller notched a team-high six blocks, four assisted and two solo, contributing ten points.
The Red Raiders held host team Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to 29 points going three games, 30-14,30-15 and 30-17. Freshman Kiley Lyons led the team with 15 kills, with a team-high hitting percentage of .538. Kelly Johnson served four aces and was second on the team with 14 kills.
Johnson and Grote received tournament honors, both being named to the All-Tournament team. Johnson was crowned tournament MVP, a first-time honor. This is the second time for both Johnson and Grote that they have been named to tournament teams.
Tech (4-0) continues play next weekend at the Big Orange Bash in Clemson, S.C., where opponents include College of Charleston, Winthrop and Clemson.
