Tech Volleyball Begins Practice For 2003 Season

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Lady Raider volleyball squad holds its first day of practice tomorrow at 9 am, at the Student Rec Center. The team will have less than a month to prepare for competition with the team traveling to Corpus Christi, Texas for the season opener. In a vote by the Big 12 volleyball head coaches, Tech was voted an eighth place preseason selection.
The squad will see a complete change of coaching staff with former assistant coach Nancy Todd holding the position of head coach. She is joined by Doug Babington, a former assistant at Rice, and Mike Moffitt, a Texas Tech graduate.
Angela Mooney is the lone senior on the team but will be joined by an experienced junior class to lead the team this season. Mooney finished second on the team in both hitting percentage with .264 and total blocks with 55.
Junior Laura Grote finished the season with 1379 assists, averaging 13.26 a game and 13.68 per game in conference play. Junior Kelly Johnson concluded her 2002 season with a team high 519 kills and two Big 12 Player of the Week honors. Junior Jessy Herrera logged 345 digs in 104 games played.
Breanna Pursley, Abby Schukman, Christina Miller, Becky Urech, Katie Halley, Jessica Watson and Daneen Grisham round out the returning Lady Raiders. Freshmen Robyn Bucy, Kiley Lyons and Raven Garret will look to make an immediate impact on the program.
Tech's home opener will be Sept. 20, when the team takes on Big 12 opponent Kansas State at 7 pm at the United Spirit Arena.
