LUBBOCK, Texas - Tech was dealt its first loss of the season tonight when it fell to New Mexico State in three games, 30-18, 30-25, 30-22, in Las Cruces, N.M. Tech could not overcome a strong defensive effort by the Aggies, who out-blocked the Raiders 12 to six, to mark its ninth win of the season.
Tech started off with a 3-0 lead, but could not hold the explosive Aggie offense under, with NMSU logging 17 kills to Tech's six. The game was a point for point match with the Aggies getting the first win of the match.
In game two at 21-29, Tech fought off four game points but could not hold the Aggies. In Tech's final game, a turn around seemed likely with Tech going on a 6-2 run to tie the game at 14. NMSU answered back with their own run of 8-1 and a momentum that sealed the win.
Tech's Kelly Johnson led the team in points with 12.5, accounting for 12 of the team's 26 kills. Junior Jessy Herrera had a team high 12 digs.
Tech (8-1) will now enter conference play next week with a match on Sept. 17 against the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colo.
