Volleyball Continues Season on the Road

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech volleyball (7-0) heads south on Tues., Sept. 9 for a match versus University of Texas-El Paso(3-4) beginning at 8 p.m. C.S.T., and then to New Mexico for a match against the New Mexico State Aggies (3-2) on Wed., Sept. 10. Tech enters this week No. 1 in the Big 12 after winning the tournament titles at the Islander Invitational and Big Orange Bash.
Junior Kelly Johnson was named tournament MVP in both tournaments and currently leads the team in kills with 157. Her two service aces against Clemson put her in a first-place tie with Heather H. Justice in career service aces.
Junior Laura Grote was also named to both all-tournament teams after she logged team-high assists in every match. Grote leads the team in assists with 340 and is second on the team with 10 service aces.
Tech holds a 17-13 record against the Miners. The Red Raiders are on a six-match winning streak over the Miners that dates back to 1994. The most recent match was in 2001 when Tech beat UTEP 3-1 in El Paso, Texas. This match marks the 30th meeting between the teams, dating back to 1975. Tech has a 19-13 advantage and is on a four-match winning streak over the Aggies after handing them a 3-0 loss last season in Lubbock.
Tech will kick off conference play Wed., Sept. 18 at Boulder, Colo., against the Colorado Buffaloes.
