Tech Track Walks Away with 11 Gold Finishes

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech track showed up strong today, as it hosted the Red Raider Classic at the Athletic Training Center in Lubbock, Texas. Tech turned in four provisional qualifying marks with 11 events claimed by the Red Raiders. Both the men's and women's 4x400 team earned provisional qualifying marks, winning the event along the way.
Tori Polk finished in second in the long jump with a mark of 19'-.50" (5.80m) and was followed by Geralda Dukuly who with a mark of 18'-8" (5.69m) finished in third. After setting the school record last weekend, Lacy Wilson finished first with a mark of 5'-8" (1.73m), another top five mark in school history. Misty Coley turned in a third-place finish with a height of 5'-6" (1.68m).
With a mark of 48'-6" (14.78m), Clifton Eddington finished in second in the triple jump while on the women's side Tech took spots one and two. With career high jumps for both, Geralda Dukuly had a jump of 39'-9.25" (12.12m) for first and Janalyn Givens with a jump of 39'-1.75' (11.93m) finished in second. Olivia Clardy took home the gold in the weight throw with a mark of 55'-.25" (16.77m), her second highest career mark.
The men's pole vault was the final field event of the day with Jared Thornhill taking the gold with a mark of 16'-7.25" (5.06m). With more attempts than Thornhill, Ken Wilson turned in a third place finish with a vault of 16'-7.25" (5.06m).
Tech took the mile by storm with Brionne Yosten turning in Tech's first women's provisional qualifying time with 4:47.61 in the mile, a first-place finish. Tracie Akerhielm followed closely behind with a time of 5:06.75 and a second-place finish. Benson Cheserek took home first in a time of 4:18.78.
In the 400, Licretia Sibley and Shereefa Lloyd finished in first and second, respectively, with times of 54.65 and 55.28. Booker, in the 400, provisionally qualified with a time of 47.06 and a first-place finish.
In the 800, Yosten turned in another top performance with a second-place finish in a time of 2:17.80 with Ruth Camacho close behind with a time of 2:18.49. Katie Leonard with a time of 10:28.04 finished in third in the 3000m, a career best performance for Leonard with Frank Ngeno representing the men's team with a third place finish in a time of 9:00.80.
In the distance medley relay, Tech's "A" team of Bridget Tidwell, Stefanie Calhoun, Akerhielm and Katie Leonard finished in first with a time of 12:57.53. The men's relay team claimed first also with a time of 11:03.14. The men's team consisted of Kyle Atwood, Steven Morales, Cheserek and Luksza.
Tech closed the meet with provisional qualifying marks in both men's and women's 4x400. The women's team improved on last weekend's 3:41.84 performance. With a time of 3:39.35, the team of Sibley, Rachelle Evans, Lloyd and Polk, won the event as well as set the fourth-best time in school history. The men's team of Booker, Matt Stewart, Bryan Scott and Jonathan Johnson, followed with another gold-winning performance. It's 3:09.89 time was just .05 seconds from a top five school record.
Tech will host the Red Raider Invitational next Saturday before heading to the University of Arkansas Invitational for its first away meet on February 14, 2004.
