LUBBOCK, Texas - Senior wide receiver Trey Haverty picked up his first national honor today as he was named to the SportsIllustrated.com Second-Team All-America list.
Haverty, a senior from Richardson, Texas, was one of six players from the Big 12 Conference to make SI.com's list joining Cedric Benson (Texas, First-Team), Derrick Johnson (Texas, First-Team), Adrian Peterson (Oklahoma, First-Team), Jamaal Brown (Oklahoma, First-Team) and Jonathan Scott (Texas, Second-Team).
Entering the 2004 campaign Haverty had just one touchdown catch and 33 combined receptions for a total of 307 yards as he saw limited playing time behind standout receivers Wes Welker and Mickey Peters. But, in 2004, "Big Play Trey" finished the regular season with 69 catches for 872 yards and six touchdowns. He averaged 79.3 yards receiving per-game and was the second-leading receiver in the Big 12 behind teammate Jarrett Hicks. He was especially crucial to Tech's success down the stretch as five of his six touchdown catches have come in the final five games of the season.
Haverty is the second Red Raider to earn national attention as freshman receiver/punt returner Danny Amendola was named to the Rivals.com Freshman All-America Second-Team. Amendola finished the regular-season with 360 yards on 27 punt returns and one touchdown while hauling in 12 receptions for 114 yards and a touchdown.
Haverty, Amendola and rest of the Red Raiders still have one more game remaining on the 2004 schedule as No. 21 Texas Tech will take on fourth-ranked California in the Holiday Bowl in San Diego on Dec. 30. Game time is set for 5 p.m. (PT).
