PHOENIX, Ariz - Junior catcher Lisa Lawler went 2 for 3 with an RBI, but it was not enough to lift the Texas Tech softball team to a win over Western Michigan, as they fell to the Broncos 2-1 on Saturday morning at the Sun Devil Softball Tournament in Phoenix, Ariz.
Tech (1-7) was able to get leadoff hitter Andrea Joachims on base in the bottom of the third inning after she drew a walk, but could not bring her around to score as the next three batters were retired.
Again in the fourth inning, it was the Lady Raiders with the leadoff hitter on base when Elyssa Sigala reached on an error. After Sigala stole second, Lawler singled deep in the hole at shortstop with one out. Britney Stolle followed and popped out to shortstop and Sigala was doubled off at second base to end the inning.
Western Michigan broke through in the top of the fifth off Tech starter Julie Hauck (0-2), who pitched a complete game for the Lady Raiders striking out five and yielding only one earned run. The Broncos were able to get the lead off batter on with a single down the right field line and bring her around to score on a single three batters later to give Western Michigan a 1-0 lead.
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Tech rallied to push across a run and tie the game. Sigala hit a ball to the gap in left center field, which hopped the wall for a ground rule double. After Kelly Rhyne reached base on an error, Lawler came to the plate and singled to drive in Sigala.
Western Michigan would recapture the lead in the top of the seventh inning when their leadoff hitter reached base on an error and scored two batters later to give the Broncos the winning tally.
The Lady Raiders will conclude play at the Sun Devil Softball Tournament tomorrow when they take on Nevada at 8:30 a.m. at the Moffort Sports Complex in Phoenix, Ariz.
