PHOENIX, Ariz. - Junior Kelly Rhyne went perfect at the plate, going 3 for 3 with and RBI as Texas Tech softball finished up play at the Fiesta Bowl Softball Tournament with a 4-1 loss to the University of Nevada in Phoenix, Ariz.
The Lady Raiders (1-9) struck first in the top of the first inning, when Ashley Parker bunted for a single and stole second. After an Elyssa Sigala strikeout, Rhyne put Tech on the scoreboard with a single to left field to drive in Parker.
The Nevada counterattack in the bottom of the inning would come up empty thanks to some solid defensive play by Tech. With a runner on second, Nevada singled to left field and was poised to score the game-tying run, but Rhyne came up throwing for left field and gunned the runner down at the plate. Later in the inning, with two outs and two runners on, Tech starter Keely Tucker recovered to get a strikeout to end the inning and protect the 1-0 lead.
Tucker could not escape the second inning unscathed, however, as she hit the first batter of the batter of the inning and the number eight and nine batters in the order followed with hits to give Nevada a 2-1 lead.
Nevada (6-4) was able to build to its lead in the fourth inning as it collected three hits in the inning the score two runs and chase Tucker, who was replaced by sophomore Julie Hauck who pitched the final 2 1/3 innings for Tech without surrendering a run and allowing only two hits.
Lady Raider Softball will be back in action this Wednesday, Feb. 18, when they will play their first home games of the season. Tech will host UTEP at Rocky Johnson Field in a doubleheader with games starting at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
