Lady Raiders Sweep Sam Houston State, 7-0

HUNTSVILLE, Texas - The Texas Tech women's tennis team bagged two victories today against Sam Houston State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Lady Raiders swept Sam Houston State, 7-0, and recorded a solid win against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 6-1. The Lady Raiders competed against Sam Houston State at 8:30 a.m. this morning, and went on to compete against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 2 p.m. due to the forfeiture of Louisiana Tech. Tech went undefeated in doubles on the day, and won all but one singles match.
In position number one in singles play, senior Irina Tereschenko knocked off Mounia Hassib (Sam Houston State), 6-2, 6-3, but fell to Carloth Santos (Texas A&M-Corpus Christi), 1-6, 7-5, 10-4, in the second match of the day. In the number two position, senior Kendall Brooks defeated Emma McDougall (Sam Houston State), 4-6, 6-3, 10-6, and also defeated Filipa Figueiredo (Texas A&M-Corpus Christi), 6-2, 6-2, in the second match. In position number three, sophomore Tara Browning bested Christina Flores (Sam Houston State), 6-1, 6-2, in the first match, and in the second match Browning defeated Lana Burton (Texas A&M-Corpus Christi), 6-0, 6-0. Competing at the number four position, freshman Lakann Wagley first defeated Erika Rudich (Sam Houston State), 6-2, 6-3, and went on to knock off Amanda Brahim (Texas A&M-Corpus Christi), 6-0, 6-2, in the second match of the day. In position number five, sophomore Katja Kovacic defeated Bethany Yurkiw (Sam Houston State), 6-0, 6-1, in the first match, and also defeated Lauren Schmidt (Texas A&M-Corpus Christi), 6-0, 6-0, in the second match. To round out the Lady Raiders' singles play, at position number six, freshman Iva Gyurgina knocked off Amanda Jung (Sam Houston State), 6-1, 6-2, and went on to defeat Kelsey Gist (Texas A&M-Corpus Christi), 6-3, 6-3.
In doubles play, the Lady Raiders went unchallenged, winning all six doubles matches. In the first match of the day, at the number one position, Brooks and Tereschenko defeated Flores and Hassib (Sam Houston State), 8-3, and went on to defeat Figueriedo and Santos (Texas A&M-Corpus Christi), 8-0. In position number two, Browning and Kovacic knocked off McDougall and Rudich (Sam Houston State), 8-4, and later defeated Brahim and Burton (Texas A&M-Corpus Christi), 8-0. To complete doubles play, in the third position, Gyurgina and Wagley defeated Jung and Yurkiw (Sam Houston State), 8-0, in the first match, and went on to defeat Gist and Schmidt (Texas A&M-Corpus Christi), 8-6, in the second match.
"I think we played with a lot of intensity and a real sense of urgency," stated head coach Cari Groce. "We needed to get things going in the right direction after a tough weekend in Colorado, and today was a great day to do that. The players went out and dominated play from the very beginning, that was our game plan and the players executed it. I think Sam Houston State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi are both good teams and we really didn't give them any opportunity to start things up. I am pleased and I know the team is pleased. I think that gives us a lot of confidence heading into our next Big 12 match against Kansas State."
The Lady Raiders will take on Kansas State Mar. 6, at noon at the McLeod Tennis Center in Lubbock.
