LUBBOCK, Texas - Freshman redshirt right-hander Randy Gattis allowed just three hits in six innings and four Red Raiders tallied multiple hit games as Texas Tech defeated the Campbell Camels 18-1 in the 2004 season opener on Thursday afternoon at Dan Law Field.
Gattis (1-0), who missed last season due to a blood clot in his throwing arm, was outstanding today as he pitched six solid innings allowing just three hits, one walk and struck out four in 64 pitches. The redshirt freshman earned the starting nod today after having a stellar fall and early spring.
Texas Tech (1-0) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back as the Red Raiders scored in every frame but the sixth. Junior center fielder Michael Mask recorded the first RBI of the season when he hit a sacrifice fly in the first that scored shortstop Cameron Blair putting the Red Raiders ahead 1-0. Senior third baseman Josh Haney rounded out the scoring with a sacrifice fly to left to push the Red Raider lead to 2-0.
The Red Raiders added single runs in the second and third innings before exploding for nine runs in the fourth and fifth. Campbell starter Josh Blades walked three runners in the fourth and hit two batters while Tech got a two RBI single from junior first baseman Josh Brady and a RBI sacrifice fly from Haney.
Tech tacked on five more runs in the fifth this time off reliever Tyler Sexton who gave up four hits including a double to Blair, a triple to second baseman Jose Delgado and an RBI double to Josh Haney.
Texas Tech padded its lead to 18-0 heading into the top of the ninth when the Camels scored their lone run of the afternoon. Joe Anthonsen reached on an error by Tech reliever Steven Thomas and then scored in the next at-bat when Mike Preist doubled to right-center field.
Jose Delgado led the Tech offense with four hits on the day as he was 4-for-5 with three runs scored. Josh Brady and Josh Haney both tallied three RBI on the afternoon. Randy Gattis (1-0) earned the win for Tech while Josh Blades (0-1) suffered the loss for Campbell.
Texas Tech and Campbell will continue the three-game series at 3 p.m. on Friday at Dan Law Field.
