San Marcos, TX - Texas Tech got the pitching performance that they had hoped for to start the season, but could not generate enough offense as the team fell in its season opener to Texas A&M Corpus Christi 1-0 in the opening game of the 2004 Texas State Softball Classic in San Marcos, TX.
Tech threatened in the first with second baseman Britney Stolle and left-fielder Kelly Rhyne reaching on walks and advancing on a balk by Islander pitcher Sarah Pauly. The Lady Raiders could not convert as the two were stranded when Lisa Lawler struck out to end the inning. Pauly limited Tech to three hits and finished the game with eleven strikeouts.
Tech starter Erin Crawford left the game in the fourth inning after she was struck on the lower body by a line drive. Sophomore Julie Hauck came in from the bullpen to replace Crawford and gave up a pair of Islander hits but recovered to hold the Islanders off the board in the fourth and keep the game scoreless.
In the top of the fifth, the Lady Raiders were able to get a pair of base runners when third baseman Natalie Kula singled and Stolley reached base on an error. However, Tech was unable to capitalize. Hauck returned to the mound in the bottom of the inning and retired the side in order to send the game into the sixth inning scoreless.
After Tech was unable to get anything going in the top of the sixth, the Islanders pushed the games first and only run across the plate in the bottom of the inning when Katie Evan led off a double. Jennifer Golden followed the double with a base hit of her own, singling into centerfield to score Evans from second.
