ALBUQUERQUE, NM - Senior Elyssa Sigala would extend her school record hitting streak to 17 games, but it was not enough to lift Texas Tech softball to a victory as they fell to New Mexico 3-1 in Albuquerque, NM, on Friday afternoon.
In the top of the first inning, Sigala would single through the right side of the infield to extend her hitting streak.
The Lady Raiders (16-17) would have a chance to break the game open in top of the fourth inning. Natalie Kula lead the game off with a single and was forced out on a fielder's choice off the bat of Kelly Rhyne. A single by Brandy Moulin and a walk by Britney Stolle would load the bases with two outs for Ashleigh Renfro, who could not convert grounding out to end the inning.
New Mexico would get on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Stephanie Kennedy would homer off of Tech starter Julie Hauck (2-6) who had allowed only one hit prior to that at bat. Hauck would be forced to leave the game with an injury after fielding a grounder later the in the inning. Junior Keely Tucker would replace Hauck.
Shortstop Ora Hensley would give the Lobos a 2-0 lead when she lead off the bottom of the fifth inning with her first career home run off of Tucker.
The Lady Raiders tried to rally in the top of the sixth, but could only manage one run. Kula led the inning off with her second single of the game and was followed by Sigala who walked. A Rhyne double would plate Kula and put runners on second and third with no outs for Moulin who popped out. The next batter would be Britney Stolle who would walk, but during the at bat, Sigala was be picked off at third for the second out in the inning. Renfro would come to plate and line out to second base to end the inning.
The loss snaps Tech's season high seven game winning streak and is only the team's third loss in its last 15 games.
Texas Tech Softball will return to action on Monday, March 22, when they host Texas State in a doubleheader at Rocky Johnson Field with games starting at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
