LUBBOCK, Texas - Freshman pitcher Kassy Planck threw a five hit complete game leading Texas Tech softball to a 2-1 win over New Mexico State in nine innings on Wednesday afternoon at Rocky Johnson Field.
The Lady Raiders (18-20) drew first blood in the bottom of the third to take a 1-0 lead. Tech would get a leadoff single by Natalie Kula and Natalie Enderlin followed by being hit by a pitch. With one out, Brandy Moulin would drive in Kula with a single through the right side of the infield.
Planck (2-1) kept the Aggies off the scoreboard until the top of the seventh, when New Mexico State was able to push the tying run across. The Aggies would get back-to-back singles to start the inning and an error by Kula would load the bases with no outs. A one-out single plated the tying run, but Plank would bear down to prevent any further damage.
After Tech was unable to plate the winning run in the bottom of the seventh, Planck took the mound and prevented the runner, placed on second base as part of the international tiebreaker rule, from scoring in the eighth.
Planck would finish the game with three strikeouts in her second complete game effort of the season.
In the bottom of the eight, the Lady Raiders came close but could not end the game. With Kelly Rhyne on second, Moulin singled but Rhyne was gunned down at the plate for the first out in the inning. The next two batters would be retired to send the game to the ninth.
After New Mexico was held off the board in the top of the ninth, it took only one batter for the Lady Raider to win the game in the bottom half of the inning. After Stolle was placed on second to start the inning, Lisa Lawler tried to bunt her over. A throwing error by pitcher allowed Stolle to score from second to end the game.
Texas Tech Softball will take the field for game two of the doubleheader at Rocky Johnson this afternoon and will take to the road for a Big 12 series against Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas, this weekend.
