LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech junior outfielder Michael Mask was named the Big 12 Conference Player-of-the-Week today for his outstanding performance in the four-game round robin series against Harvard and Air Force.
Mask, a native of Sarasota, Fla., and transfer from Galveston Community College, helped lead the Red Raiders to a perfect 4-0 record over the weekend as Tech won two games each against Harvard and Air Force. Collectively, Mask hit .571 over the weekend as he was 8-for-14 at the plate with a double, a triple, three home runs and 12 RBI. Against Harvard in the first game of the doubleheader on Saturday, he belted three home runs and drove in six runs to help Tech to an 18-6 win over the Crimson. Mask's three home runs in the game marked the first time a Tech player had three home runs since Kevin Jordan hit three against Texas in 1998.
Mask's stellar weekend improved his overall batting average to .413 and he now leads Tech and the Big 12 Conference with seven home runs.
The Red Raiders return to action on Friday as they begin play in the 2004 Maxwell Auto Group Round Rock College Classic at the Dell Diamond in Round Rock. Tech will play Illinois at 11 a.m. on Friday, Notre Dame at 11 a.m. on Saturday and Texas State at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
