LINCOLN, Neb. - In an intense battle on the courts today, the Nebraska Cornhuskers managed to sneak past the Texas Tech women's tennis team, 4-3. The Lady Raiders took home three singles matches including senior Irina Tereschenko's upset win over the nation's No. 62 player, Gitte Ostermann. Tech won the first position doubles match, but went on to lose the doubles point. Tech moves to an overall spring record of 11-7 and 4-5 in Big 12 Conference play.
In singles action, Tech took home victories at the first, second, and third positions, including Tereschenko's upset win over No. 62 Ostermann, 4-6, 7-6 (10-5), at the first position. In the second position, senior Kendall Brooks knocked off Milena Schulz-Gartner, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, while sophomore Tara Browning knocked off Leslie Harvey, 6-2, 6-3, in the third position capturing Tech's third singles victory. In the fourth spot, freshman Lakann Wagley lost a tough battle to Rose Ketmayura, 6-4, 6-5. Sophomore Katja Kovacic was defeated by Anna Oehme, 6-2, 6-2, in the fifth position, while freshman Hristiyana Gocheva, playing in the sixth position, was knocked off by Katie Garcia, 6-1, 6-3, to round out singles play.
In doubles action, the Lady Raiders took home a win at position number one, but lost the second and third position matches. In the first spot, Tereschenko and Kovacic ousted Harvey and Ketmayura, 9-8, to take Tech's only doubles victory. In the second position, Brooks and Browning were defeated by Ostermann and Garcia, 8-4, while Gocheva and Wagley lost their match to Schulz-Gartner and Oehme, 9-7, in the third spot.
"I think we had a good weekend overall," said head coach Cari Groce. "The team fought hard. It's hard to swallow a loss when your top three singles players win. If you win at positions one, two, and three in singles, you should be winning the duel because those are the toughest three positions out there. If we're winning those three, there's no reason we can't pick up a win at one of the other positions to win the match. But we're a young team for the most part, they're fighting very hard, and I think they're representing Texas Tech in a very positive manner."
The Lady Raiders return home to take on Oklahoma on Sun., April 18, at 10 a.m. at the McLeod Tennis Center.
