LUBBOCK, Texas - After swallowing a tough loss yesterday to No. 14 Texas A&M, the Texas Tech women's tennis team bounced back this morning at the McLeod Tennis Center where they took down Oklahoma State, 4-3. Even though OSU took home the doubles point, the Lady Raiders sealed the victory by taking four out of six singles matches.
In the first spot in singles action, senior Irina Tereschenko knocked off Katya Kolodynska, 6-4, 6-2, while senior Kendall Brooks ousted Ines Furtmayr, 7-5, 6-0, in the second position. Sophomore Tara Browning defeated Jana Karaskova, 6-3, 6-2, in the third spot. In the fourth position, freshman Lakann Wagley was defeated by Zana Masnic, 6-2, 6-0. Taking home Tech's fourth singles victory was sophomore Katja Kovacic, who knocked off Lauren Simmons, 6-4, 6-1, in the fifth position. Freshman Hristiyana Gocheva lost her match at the sixth spot to Jennifer Poskitt, 7-5, 6-0.
The Lady Raiders struggled on the doubles court, losing two out of three matches and the doubles point. Brooks and Browning took home Tech's only doubles victory at the second position, where they knocked off Furtmayr and Masnic, 8-2. In the first position, Tereschenko and Kovacic were defeated by Karaskova and Kolodsynska, 8-5, while Wagley and Gocheva lost their match to Poskitt and Simmons, 8-3, in the third spot.
"Yesterday was just a tough match, and we wanted to play and prepare ourselves for today," said head coach Cari Groce. "I think we came out and played in tough conditions. Oklahoma State is a good team as well, and we really didn't let them get any kind of momentum. I think we shut them down pretty quickly. The team really wanted this win today, they really wanted to beat Oklahoma State and that was one of their goals. We're really pleased with the win."
The Lady Raiders move to a spring record of 10-6 and 3-4 in Big 12 Conference play, and will try to extend their conference record with a pair of road games against Iowa State on Sat., April 10, and Nebraska on Sun., April 11. The team returns to the McLeod Tennis Center on Sun., April 18, where it will on Oklahoma at 10 a.m.
