STILLWATER, Okla. - No. 22 Oklahoma State broke open a 3-2 game in the sixth with 10 runs and the Cowboys went on to hand Texas Tech its worst loss of the season 14-2 on Friday night in the series opener at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium in front of 1,672 fans.
Texas Tech committed a season-high four errors on the night and its losing streak is also at a season-high four games. The Red Raiders are now 32-17 on the year and 12-9 in league play but hold on to fourth place thanks to a 3-2 Kansas State win over Texas A&M. Oklahoma State improved to 32-16 overall and 15-6 in the Big 12.
Texas Tech struck first in the top of the third when junior first baseman Josh Brady hit a two-out double to right field with the bases loaded scoring Jose Delgado and Cody Fuller.
The Cowboys came right back in the bottom of the third as Keanon Simon reached on a leadoff walk and then scored on an RBI single by designated hitter Ty Wright. A two-out fielding error by shortstop Cameron Blair allowed the Cowboys to tie the score as Wright came home on a ball that was put into play by Jason Jaramillo.
Oklahoma State took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth as Scott Kirby led off with a double and then scored on a Mario Matulich RBI single.
The Cowboys blew the game wide open in the bottom of the sixth inning as they scored 10 runs on seven hits. The inning included a grand slam home run by Simon and he finished the game with three hits and six RBI.
Steven Thomas (3-6) suffered the loss for Texas Tech as he gave up six earned runs on nine hits in five innings of work. Thomas Cowley (5-2) earned the win for Oklahoma State as he held Tech to just two earned runs on five hits in seven innings.
Texas Tech and Oklahoma State resume their three-game series at 7 p.m. on Saturday night at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
