Two Red Raiders Crowned All-Americans

AUSTIN, Texas - Senior Jason Young and junior Tyree Gailes combined for 15 points to put the Red Raiders in 5th-place with 13 points heading into the final day of competition at the 2004 NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas. Tech enters day four ahead of all Big 12 schools as well as within three points of last season's point total.
Young wrapped up his stellar collegiate career with a runner-up finish in the discus. Young flung his way to a second-place finish with a throw of 197'-8" (60.24m) to finish behind SMU's Hannes Hopley who turned in a mark of 203'-5" (62.01m). This is Young's second outdoor All-American honor of which he earned the first last season with a throw of 194'-5". Young's eight points were Tech's first points of the day and placed the team tied for sixth.
After breaking a school record time of 10.17 in the prelims of the 100M dash yesterday, Gailes tore it down again with a smokin' time of 10.11 in the finals and a fourth-place finish. Gailes is Tech's first All-American in the 100M dash. Gailes will also join junior Jonathan Johnson at the Olympic Trials as his time met the "B" standard.
Senior Aki Heikkinen clocked a time of 11.25 in the 100M dash for 806 points and proceeded to the long jump where he jumped 22'-8.5" for 14th place and 795 points. After the shot put, where the Big 12 Champion threw 45'-0.25" he was sitting in 13th-place heading into the high jump. Heikkinen heads into day two in 18th-place with 3807 points after running a 50.34-400m dash (799 points).
Junior Licretia Sibley finished fourth in her heat in the 400M with a time of 53.60 but would not advance to finals. Sibley will compete as the anchor leg for the women's 4x400 team tomorrow at 9:35 p.m.
Freshman Kelley Schulz and sophomore Dana Rosenbladt competed in the women's pole vault and would finish 10th and 21st, respectively. Schulz cleared 13'-1.5" (4.00M) on two attempts after clearing 12'-3.50" (3.75m) and 12'-9.50" (3.90m) with one each. Schulz would go out at 13'-1.5". Rosenbladt cleared 12'-3.50" (3.75m) on her first attempt and would go out at that height.
Freshman Bryan Scott finished sixth in his heat with a time of 51.78 in the 400M hurdles.
The meet will conclude tomorrow with the finals of the decathlon, men's pole vault, men's 400M hurdles, men's 800M and the women's 4x400. Complete results can be found at www.texassports.com.
