LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech will play seven games at home in 2005, including the first four on the turf at Jones SBC Stadium, and will host two of the Big 12 Conference's traditional powers, the athletics department announced Wednesday.
"The schedule is the start of the process of sending the message that we will play home games," Tech head coach Mike Leach said. "Our fans deserve home games. Following the 2004 schedule, we will have played an awful lot of non-conference games on the road in the previous couple of seasons. This is a better situation for our fans and team as we prepare for the Big 12 schedule."
The Red Raiders will open the season against Florida International in Lubbock on Sept. 10, marking the latest starting date to a season since the 1984 campaign opened against UT-Arlington on Sept. 15. The schedule also is the first since the 2001 season where the Red Raiders will only play one set of back-to-back road games.
Sam Houston State (Sept. 17) and Indiana State (Sept. 24) will round out the non-conference slate at home, before the Red Raiders open Big 12 Conference play against Kansas on Oct. 1 at Jones SBC Stadium. The team will make its first road trip of the season at Nebraska (Oct. 8), before returning home to face Kansas State on Oct. 15.
The only back-to-back road games of the season will be at Texas (Oct. 22) and Baylor (Oct. 29). Following the two-game road trip, the Red Raiders will host Texas A&M (Nov. 5) and travel to Oklahoma State (Nov. 12), before closing the season against Oklahoma on Nov. 19 in Lubbock.
"We need our fans to attend our games to insure us playing more home non-conference games in the future," Leach added. "Our fans are a vital part of our program and the success we've experienced. Their attendance is important to the future of Texas Tech football."
