LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech volleyball team just completed its first week of two-a-days in preparation for the upcoming season. The ladies have been working on meshing well together as a team, as nine of the 16-person roster are either incoming freshmen or transfers. Tech seniors Laura Grote, Daneen Grisham and Kelly Johnson couldn't be more excited about the team's progress these last two weeks, and can't wait to get this season's started. "So far practices are really intense and they are going really well," said Grote. "It's a lot of fun to see all the newcomers come in and do really well and step up during practice." "It's exciting to see the skill level improve from last year," said Grisham. "It encouraging to see how well we are playing as a team already before the seasons started." "Its nice to see that this year we have a lot of depth in every position," said Johnson. "With a lot of people able to play every position, it makes every work hard to claim their spot." With the first week completed, the Red Raiders have a week and a half before getting their first chance of the season to show what they can do on the court. The Lady Raiders will begin the 2004-05 season in San Diego, Calif., where the team will compete at the San Diego State Tournament Sept. 3-4. Tech will face UC Santa Barbara, Wichita State and tournament host San Diego State in a round robin tournament format. You can catch the Red Raider volleyball team this Saturday at the Autograph/Fan Day, where the team will join the Red Raider women's soccer team and the Red Raider Football team to sign autographs. The event will be held on Saturday, Aug. 20, at Jones SBC Stadium at 7:00 p.m. Fans are encouraged to bring their own items to be signed as a limited number of posters will be on hand. Fans are asked to park on the west side of Jones SBC Stadium and enter the stadium through the Southwest ramp near Gate 1.
