LUBBOCK, Texas- - Desiree Batista, a junior college transfer from Frank Phillips College, was named the August 2004 Scholar Athlete of the Month. Batista receives the honor from the nationally recognized Volleyball Magazine. Volleyball Magazine is well known for being the publisher of the annual Fab 50 list that recognizes the nations top high school graduating seniors for men's and women's volleyball. Batista comes to Tech after completing two successful years at Frank Phillips College where she helped lead the team to a fifth-place finish at the 2003 NJCAA Championships. While at Frank Phillips CC Batista was a two-time All-American. Batista was also tabbed as a two-time WJCAC MVP selection and was named to the All-Region V Team while claiming a spot on the NJCAA all-tournament team. Batista was not just a scholar of the game, but was one in the classroom. Batista received the American Scholar Award, Minority Leadership Award and the Academic Plainsmen of the Year Honor during her two years at Frank Phillips CC. Batista was also tabbed as one the nation's "Who's Who Among Community College Students". Batista now looks to start another chapter in her already successful volleyball career here at Texas Tech, as she takes to the court in the team's first scrimmage Saturday, August 24, 2004, at 1 p.m. All fans are invited to come out and see Batista and the nine-new faces that join the 16-person roster this year. The scrimmage will take place in the arena's practice gym, located on the court level at the north end of the arena.
