Lubbock, TEXAS -
The Texas Tech volleyball team will head to San Diego, Calif., for the San Diego State Tournament this weekend Sept. 3-4. This marks the first tournament of the season for the Red Raiders and their first of two preseason tournaments on the 2004-05 schedule.
The Red Raiders will face host San Diego State (SDSU), UC Santa Barbara (UCSB) and Wichita State at this weekend's tournament.
SDSU is a team Tech has only played four times over a 27-year period. San Diego State leads the series 4-0, but comes into the 2004-05 season with a totally different team from a year ago. The Aztecs graduated seven seniors, five of which were starters on the team that finished fourth in the Mountain West Conference last year.
UCSB also leads the series against Tech, 3-0. The Gauchos come into the tournament ranked 16th in the USA Today/CSTV top 25 coaches preseason poll, as well being the two-time defending Big West Conference champions.
The Red Raiders enter the tournament with a 4-0 edge over the Wichita State Shockers, winning the last meeting between the two teams in Aug. 31, 1996, 3-1. Wichita State comes into the tournament voted to finish first along with Northern Iowa in the 2004 Missouri Valley Conference preseason coaches poll, after finishing third in conference a year ago.
"For us to do well at San Diego," said head coach Nancy Todd, "the girls are going to have to really play hard and play together the entire weekend. There cant be any let downs."
Tech will open up the weekend with a match against host San Diego State at 12:30 p.m. All of the matches over the weekend will be covered with live stats through the San Diego State sports website at http://goaztecs/collegesports.com/livestats/w-volley/. The website will not be cumulative for all of the matches played this weekend. After the first match, the stats from that match can be viewed all the way up until the next scheduled match. After that, the next match will replace the previous stats.
