LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech cross country squads will be competing in the 19th annual Roy Griak Invite, Sat., Sept. 25, in Minneapolis, Minn., on the campus of the University of Minnesota. The men's squad is coming off a fifth-place finish at the Lobo Invite, while the women's squad ran to a first-place finish in Albuquerque.
The men will be running an 8K race in the Division I field that includes Big 12 rivals Baylor, Kansas, Colorado and Nebraska. Also in the men's competition will be Mountain Region opponents Colorado State and Utah State.
Also competing in the Division I field in a 6K race is the No. 24 women's squad. The women's squad is ranked third in the Mountain Region behind BYU and the 2003 Big 12 Champions, Colorado. Also competing in the Griak Invite, in the women's field, will be Big 12 foes Baylor, Kansas and Nebraska, as well as Mountain Region rivals Colorado State and Utah State.
"I would be very pleased with a top 10 finish from the women going into this meet," said head coach Burke Binning. "The competition is very tough, and we are looking to knock off a few teams that we think will make it to nationals from weaker regions. The women finished 16th there last year, but come in to this year's race as the seventh highest rated team. The men can only get better after last years performance, where they finished last. We are better up front than we have been in year's past, but our tail is not what it should be yet. We will get there and surprise some people."
The men's division takes off first at 11:20 a.m., followed by the women at 12:10 p.m. For complete results of the Roy Griak Invite and Texas Tech cross country, visit www.texastech.com.
