Two Tech Volleyball Players Earn All-Tournament Selection

Lubbock, Texas - Two Red Raiders were named to the All-Tournament team at the San Diego State Tournament in San Diego, Calif. Junior Desiree Batista and senior Kelly Johnson were the two Red Raiders making the list along with two players from No.19 UC-Santa Barbara and Wichita State.
Tech finished the tournament third in front of host school San Diego State. The Red Raiders two losses came against Wichita State in four-games and in three-games against No.19 UCSB. The Red Raiders lone win came against the SDSU Aztecs, which is the school's first win against the Aztec program in five tries.
Batista led the team in aces against the Aztecs with six, also setting Tech's all-time record for the most aces in a four-game match. Batista's record places fourth in all matches. Batista also tallied 11 kills, one error on 35 attempts and a .268 hitting percentage in the win against the Aztecs. Batista also tossed in seven digs and one block on the winning effort. Against the Wichita State Shockers Batista led the team in kills with 11, while contributing her second-most aces in a match with four. In the losing effort Batista posted six digs and two blocks. In the Red Raiders final match of the tournament, Batista turned in her third-straight 11-kill match with five errors on 29 attempts, to hit .207. Batista coupled the team high hitting percentage with one block and eight digs.
Senior Kelly Johnson came into the season as Tech's all-time career kills leader, picking up this season right where she left off from last year. Johnson turned in 14 kills in the team's opening match, coupling the effort with eight digs and three blocks. Johnson followed the winning effort with a 10-kill match with seven errors on 33 attempts, one ace and four digs against the Shockers. Johnson then led the Red Raiders in the team's loss against the Gauchos of UCSB, turning in 12 kills, seven errors on 39 attempts, one assist, eight digs and one block.
The Red Raiders will return to action in the team's home tournament at the Red Raider Roundup Sept. 10-11. Tech will play host to North Texas, UTEP and UT-Pan American at the United Spirit Arena in Lubbock, Texas, before beginning conference play at home against the Oklahoma Sooners Sept. 15, at 7 p.m.
