LUBBOCK, Texas - The 2004 Texas Tech cross country season gets under way this weekend as the men's and women's squads, under the direction of head coach Burke Binning, head to Albuquerque, N.M., for the annual Lobo Invite, held at the UNM North Golf Course. The intercollegiate race is slated to start at 10:20 a.m.
The field is highly competitive this year, with appearances by UTEP, Texas Tech, Texas A&M and LSU. Regional squads from Eastern New Mexico, Western New Mexico, New Mexico Highlands and Regis University round out the collegiate field.
The women's squad is coming off its best finish in the program's history. They earned a fourth-place finish in the Big 12 and then went on to place fifth at the NCAA Mountain Region Championships. The women's squad was led by Tracie Akerhielm, who was the top Tech finisher at the Big 12 meet, placing 13th overall. This week, Texas Tech women's cross country received votes in the FinishLynx NCAA Division I Women's Cross Country National Poll.
The men's squad also improved greatly last season and looks to continue the momentum with this year's recruiting class. They finished 10th at the Big 12 Championships, led by Benson Cheserek, Tech's top finisher, who placed 19th overall.
